For kids under 40 pounds, high-speed movement in Evenflo’s “Big Kid” could cause critical injuries, paralysis or death. Contact us if you’re concerned.
ProPublica recently revealed that, despite warnings from its safety engineers dating back to 2012, Evenflo has continued to recommend its Big Kid—a booster seat designed for children 40-110 pounds—for children weighing under 40 pounds. Not only does Evenflo recommend this seat for children of that size, but it also states that the Big Kid boosters have been rigorously “side impact tested.”
Evenflo’s internal documents paint a different picture, however; they show that children-size crash dummies in Big Kid car seats were thrown out of their shoulder belts when subjected to certain collision tests. Such movement could cause a real child to suffer catastrophic head, neck, and spinal injuries, or even death. Evenflo nevertheless gave its seats passing grades based on these tests and told parents both that the seats were safe for kids under 40 pounds.
