Case Overview
On January 7, 2025, the Eaton Fire ignited on the eastern flank of Eaton Canyon in Los Angeles County, California, resulting in widespread destruction, including the loss of lives, homes, and property. Plaintiffs filed suit against Southern California Edison Company (SCE) and its parent company, Edison International, alleging that the fire was caused by their negligent management and maintenance of electrical infrastructure.
According to the complaint, the Eaton Canyon Powerlines, owned and operated by SCE, were identified as the likely ignition source of the fire. Plaintiffs allege that SCE and Edison failed to properly design, inspect, maintain, and operate their electrical equipment, and negligently chose not to de-energize the Eaton Canyon Powerlines despite clear weather warnings predicting extreme wind conditions that could exacerbate wildfire risks.
The Complaint also details prior incidents where SCE’s equipment was implicated in causing major wildfires in California, arguing a pattern of negligence and failure to adhere to wildfire mitigation protocols.
The lawsuit brings forward multiple claims, including negligence, trespass, private and public nuisance, inverse condemnation, violations of California's Public Utilities Code § 2106 and Health and Safety Code § 13007, and premises liability. Plaintiffs seek compensatory damages for personal injuries, property destruction and loss of use, emotional distress, and other losses, as well as punitive or exemplary damages to hold the defendants accountable for their conduct. A jury trial has been demanded.
