On the evening of Friday, January 5th, Alaska Airline Flight 1282 had a nearly tragic fuselage panel failure when a plugged emergency exit was ripped from the plane mid-flight, causing a rapid loss of cabin pressure. The pilots were able to perform an emergency landing.
The Boeing 737 Max 9 which was heading from Portland, Oregon bound for Ontario, California, was still climbing when shortly after takeoff, a gaping hole “as wide as a refrigerator” blew open in the plane’s port side. It was fortunate that the plane had not yet reached cruising altitude when the incident occurred, as the passenger and crew were not moving around the cabin unsecured.
It’s now being reported that the very jetliner that suffered the blow out was barred from flying over water on long trips so that the plane could return to airport quickly in case of an emergency. According to a federal official, a warning light that could have indicated a pressurization problem had previously lit up on three different flights prior to the incident! And yet this jetliner was still in service, transporting hundreds of human lives 35,000 feet above the earth.
