From the 1950s through the 1980s people living or working at the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, were potentially exposed to contaminated drinking water. Three on-base water wells that were shut down in 1985 contained the industrial solvents Trichloroethylene (TCE), Perchloroethylene (PCE), Benzene, Vinyl Chloride, and other chemicals.
If you served at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune or Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River in North Carolina, you may have had contact with the contaminants in the drinking water. Scientific and medical evidence has shown an association between exposure to these contaminants and the subsequent development of certain diseases or health conditions later on. These include:
- Adult leukemia
- Bladder cancer
- Breast cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Female infertility
- Hepatic steatosis
- Kidney cancer
- Leukemia
- Liver cancer
- Lung cancer
- Miscarriage
- Multiple myeloma
- Myelodysplastic syndromes
- Neurobehavioral effects
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Parkinson’s disease
- Renal toxicity
- Scleroderma
The new Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 was passed in June 2022 as part of the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act. This provides compensation for illnesses that may have been caused by drinking contaminated water while living or serving at Camp Lejeune from 1953-1987.
You could be eligible to file a lawsuit if you or your loved one:
- Were exposed to contaminated drinking water for at least 30 days between August 1, 1952 and December 31, 1987
- Suffered cancer or other health issues related to water contamination at Camp Lejeune
