Keller Rohrback is investigating reports that certain college athletic departments are taking huge payments from sportsbooks (establishments that take monetary bets on sporting events) to allow them to promote and advertise online gambling on various campuses and even partnering with them to promote gambling to students directly in some instances.
While sports betting is now legal in most states due to a 2018 Supreme Court decision, it is only legal for people who are at least 21 years of age in the vast majority of them. Given that the most undergraduates are underage, these arrangements clearly appear to violate the gambling industries’ own “Responsible Marketing Code” published by the American Gaming Association, which prohibits the marketing of gambling to underage people.
The risks of gambling addiction are real and can ruin lives. It is unethical and outrageous, that universities, the institutions responsible for educating and preparing our young adults for life, are endorsing gambling to this vulnerable population in order to line their pockets.
If you are student or the parent of a student at a university that is advertising sports betting, including LSU, Michigan State, Colorado, Syracuse, or Maryland, we want to hear from you.
