Keller Rohrback is investigating reports that private blood cord banks, such as Cord Blood Registry (CBR), ViaCord and Cryo-Cell, have been misleading parents into paying thousands of dollars in collection and storage fees for a service that is likely both unnecessary and unable to provide the advertised benefits.
These private blood cord banks reportedly use celebrity endorsements and kickbacks to obstetricians to market their services to expectant parents as a “biological insurance policy” which might one day provide a cure “tailor-made cure” for future diseases and conditions such as autism, diabetes, cerebral palsy, and cancers like leukemia amongst many others.
For many parents, its an easy choice, and few thousand dollars is a small price to pay to ensure the future health of your child. But are the cord blood banks overselling what is actually possible? The New York Times investigative reporting stated outright that “the leading banks have consistently misled customers and doctors about the technology’s promise.” According to the Times, doctors rarely use cord blood anymore because it has become easier to use adult stem cells due to medical advances. In addition, the cord blood samples that parents have paid hard earned money to collect and store are often too small to be useful or have been contaminated by microbes.
