The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently alleged that Fifth Third Bank (“Fifth Third”) opened bank and credit card accounts without customers’ permission. The CFPB claims that Fifth Third has been engaging in these practices since 2008, despite repeated warnings that employees were opening unauthorized accounts to meet sales goals. These unauthorized accounts can cause harm to consumers, including:
- the burden of unjustified fees;
- the theft of funds;
- the theft of private information;
- increased cost of borrowing; and
- the inability to meet financial obligations.
“It goes without saying that customers only want bank accounts and credit cards that they’ve requested,” said Keller Rohrback attorney Matthew Preusch. “These types of fraudulent practices only harm the consumers banks are set up to serve.”
If you believe Fifth Third opened a bank or credit card account in your name without your consent any time between 2008 and now, please contact Keller Rohrback at [email protected], 800-776-6044, or by using the secure form.
