Recent news reports have revealed that driver data has been routinely collected by General Motors (GM), Honda, Kia, and Hyundai using OnStar technology primarily intended for navigation and emergency service purposes. The information gathered by OnStar, a GM subsidiary, is then processed by LexisNexis and Verisk, and marketed to the insurance industry. The practice has been conducted without customers’ legal consent, and has affected insurance rates.
The GM family of vehicles includes the brands: Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC. The Honda family also includes the Acura luxury brand.
Many consumers are not aware that their vehicles with the OnStar service collect and share data about their driving habits. But as reports indicate, certain sensitive information about acceleration, speed, braking, and mileage is collected, converted into a ‘risk score’ by LexisNexis Risk Solutions and Verisk, and offered to insurers.
If you own or lease a GM, Honda, Kia, or Hyundai vehicle that is a model year 2019 or newer, we’d like to hear from you.
