Keller Rohrback is investigating whether Google, through the Google Play Store, is engaging in conduct that is harmful to consumers and that may be violating federal and state antitrust laws. If you have purchased an app or made in-app purchases through the Google Play Store on an Android phone, a hefty percentage of your purchase likely went to Google instead of to the developer, as Google charges a 30% tax on all apps sold to Android users and on all in-app purchases.
Google eliminated competition by forcing consumers to purchase their Android phone apps on the Google Play Store. On top of that, it uses that monopolistic power to impose a tax on every transaction between app developers and consumers, whether it be the sale of an app or an in-app purchase. This behavior puts both app developers and consumers at a disadvantage, as monopolies drive up costs, which app purchasers then have to pay. If Google did not have a monopoly on the sale of Android apps, multiple app stores would have to compete for the business consumers, likely lowering costs over time
