Keller Rohrback Files Suit Against Manufacturers of Type 2 Diabetes Drug Invokana

On November 9, 2017, Keller Rohrback filed suit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., Janssen Research & Development LLC, and Johnson & Johnson on behalf of our clients Steven Smith and Donna Beacom-Smith. The suit was filed to hold Defendants accountable for failing to warn Plaintiff Steven Smith and his physicians of the significant risk of amputation and acute kidney injury associated with ingestion of Invokana. As a result, Plaintiff Smith suffered acute kidney injury and multiple lower-limb amputations.

This lawsuit stems from our investigation into the increased risk of leg and foot amputations (full or partial) when taking the SGLT2 inhibitors Invokana, Invokamet, Invokamet XR, all of which are used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. The investigation followed a May 16, 2017, Safety Announcement made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after data from two clinical studies demonstrated that the Type 2 diabetes medicine canagliflozin (Invokana, Invokamet, Invokamet XR) causes an increased risk of leg and foot amputations. The FDA required new warnings, including their most prominent Boxed Warning, to be added to the canagliflozin drug labels to describe this risk. Researchers found that, after following patients for an average of over three years of treatment, twice as many patients given canagliflozin required amputations as those who took a placebo.

Steven Smith and Donna Beacom-Smith hired Keller Rohrback L.L.P. to represent them in this litigation. Keller Rohrback is a national law firm based in Seattle that has successfully represented hundreds of clients injured by prescription drugs such as Fen-Phen, Baycol and Vioxx.
