Keller Rohrback L.L.P. Investigates OptumRx, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna for Inflating Prescription Copays
Keller Rohrback L.L.P. is investigating recent reports that OptumRx, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna are forcing patients to overpay for prescriptions by charging a “clawback” on many commonly-used medications.
A clawback occurs when your stated copay is more expensive than the retail cost of the prescription, or the price you would pay if you didn’t have insurance.
For example, your insurance policy states that a Tier 1 copay is $30.00 but the retail cost of the drug is only $4.00. You pay the $30.00 copay at the pharmacy for a $4.00 drug and your insurance claws back the $26.00 it overcharged you.
Clawbacks are occurring on many commonly-used medications that treat illnesses including asthma, depression, A.D.H.D., seizures, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis to name a few. The pharmacy can’t tell you that you are overpaying because your insurance company won’t let them under a gag order.
