February 25, 2022 -- Drug manufacturer Johnson & Johnson and three major drug distributors: Cardinal Health Inc., McKesson Corp. and AmerisourceBergen Corp., have announced that they will collectively pay $26 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits nationwide stemming from claims that they helped fuel the tragic U.S. Opioid epidemic through lax controls and deceptive marketing. As reported in the Washington Post, this announcement “kick-starts a 60-day countdown to . . . the release of funds” which will go to over 7,000 state and local governments across the nation and will be used to fund programs aimed at addressing the epidemic.
Keller Rohrback represents a number of city, county and indigenous tribal governments covered by this settlement.
Keller Rohrback managing partner Lynn Sarko had this to say about the announcement: "This settlement shows the power of state, county, and local governments coming together to hold companies accountable. While it's a great step forward, there is still much work to be done to hold the remaining opioid defendants accountable. All our clients are working hard to address the opioid crisis.”
