Despite receiving a warning alarm hours before the rupture, the operators of the oil rig reportedly waited more than three hours to shut down the ruptured pipeline, creating a 13-square-mile slick that continued to cultivate. In addition, the company took another three hours to notify the U.S. Coast Guard’s Nation Response Center for oil spills, investigators said, continuing to slow the response of the ongoing oil spill.
