Do you have a friend or family member who was denied charitable assistance from Providence Hospital in California, New Mexico, Montana, Texas or Alaska?
The Washington State Attorney General recently settled a lawsuit with Providence health care system that alleged the hospital chain overcharged patients and used aggressive collection tactics on people who may have been entitled to financial aid. The state also argued that Providence was required to notify patients about the availability of financial aid before trying to collect payment.
Providence also manages hospitals and clinics in California, New Mexico, Montana, Texas and Alaska, and may have employed these tactics at those locations as well.

Background
State Charity Care Laws require hospitals to make financial assistance available for low-income patients to help with their out-of-pocket medical costs. Unfortunately, Providence, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country, does not make it clear to patients that they may be entitled to this assistance, and takes steps to collect payment before notifying them that they are entitled to such free care.
This “Rev-Up” program which Providence developed in consultation with McKinsey & Company, emphasizes aggressive solicitation of payment from patients, even from those identified by the Charity Care Law as qualifying for free or discounted care. Washington, where Providence is based, mandated that all hospitals in the state must provide free medical care for anyone who makes under 300 percent of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, that threshold is $83,250 per year.
What can you do if you believe you were denied rightful financial assistance?
If you, a friend, or a family member have been subjected to aggressive pre-care billing, or been told that you must pay some or all of your medical expenses by Providence Hospital even though you likely qualify for free or lower-cost assistance, contact us.
