If you have been notified that your data was compromised in the Accellion data breach, email or call us today.
In December 2020 and January 2021, cybercriminals exploited a weakness in file transfer software provided by Accellion that is used by many universities, hospitals, and other organizations. The cybercriminals accessed full names, addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, driver’s license information, passport information, financial information including bank routing and account numbers, health and related benefit information, disability information and birthdates, and other personal information, then made that information available to cybercriminals on a website called CLOP. This breach put the personal and financial information more than one million people at risk of identity theft and fraud.

Accellion, which markets itself as a specialist in secure file sharing, provides its service to over 3,000 organizations, including hospitals, universities, non-profit organizations, and private companies. Despite Accellion’s marketing claims that its file sharing software is secure, it was in fact vulnerable to compromise, resulting in a massive data breach where a staggering amount of financial and health data was published to the CLOP cybercriminal website. The hackers also circulated threatening mass emails to individuals in the University of California system.
While the list of impacted universities, hospitals, and other organizations continues to grow, the organizations currently known to have been affected include:
- University of California system
- Stanford University’s School of Medicine
- University of Colorado
- University of Maryland - Baltimore
- University of Miami
- Yeshiva University
- Washington State Auditor’s Office
- Kroger Pharmacies
