OptumRX, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Catamaran Overcharge Patients for Prescription Drugs
Recent investigations show that OptumRx, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Catamaran make their customers overpay for many commonly-used medicines. For example, if a drug costs $3.00 retail, your insurance might require you to pay $30.00 – ten times more – just because $30.00 is the stated copay.
Why should anyone be forced to pay more than the retail price of a prescription when they have insurance? This billing practice is known as a “clawback.” OptumRx, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and Catamaran are charging clawbacks across the country; however, most people have no idea it is happening to them.
A document obtained by Fox 8 in New Orleans shows Valsartan HCTZ, a medication that treats high blood pressure, costs $14.43 but UnitedHealthcare and OptumRx instructed the pharmacy to collect a $30 co-pay from the patient. UnitedHealthcare and OptumRx paid nothing for the drug and then collected the additional $15.57 clawback from the pharmacy. Click to view a list of additional medications that may include a clawback.
There are three ways to verify if you have overpaid for your medication. First, you can call your pharmacy and ask for the retail price of your medication. Second, you can enter the name of your medication and your zip code at LowestMed.com. Third, you can look up your medication on the National Average Drug Acquisition Cost on Medicaid.gov.
